In 2019, at the prime of her career, Maya stepped away from basketball to focus on criminal justice reform. Her passion for reform started in 2007 when she met a wrongly convicted inmates, Johnathan Irons. In 2020, Irons was released from prison with the help of Moore. Later that year, they would get married and work together to reform the justice system.
